Between June 30th – July 4th 2025 and July 7th-11th, two training sessions, each lasting one week, aim to train teachers, museum mediators and other professionals in the educational field in approaching difficult stories, such as the transatlantic slave trade.
This edition will have the participation of Portuguese, Brazilian, and American scholars, including Aurora Almada e Santos, Cristina Roldão,
Lucimar Felisberto dos Santo, Marta Araújo, Orlando Serrano and Raquel Machaqueiro (SWP – George Washington University).
The trainings will also include two masterclasses by Gulbenkian’s curators Inês Brandão (Gulbenkian Museum)
and Susana Gomes da Silva (CAM – Center of Modern Art), as well as a guided visit to the Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon during which Marta Lourenço, the museum’s director, will talk about some of the ethical
issues regarding the colonial collections that the museum hosts.
At the end of each training, there will be a public conference during which Lucimar Felisberto dos Santos and Orlando Serrano, and Aurora Almada e Santos (July 4th) and Marta Araújo (July 11) will discuss the importance of understanding the history of slavery and the slave trade, its legacies in contemporaneous societies, and some of the policies adopted to counter racial discrimination and inequality.
