SWP in the New: Submerged in the Indian Ocean, Documentary
June 15, 2026
In this documentary, the Portuguese reporter Sofia Leite highlights the rich historical and cultural heritage of Mozambique Island, focusing on its Swahili origins and first contacts with other civilizations of the Indian Ocean. While doing so, Leite showcases SWP’s work and its strong commitment to train the next generation of maritime archaeologists and heritage stewards. The documentary then turns to the tragic history of the French slave ship L’Aurore, which sank close to the island after a slave revolt on board. Leite follows this fascinating history through the Portuguese and French archives, and back to the Island, to remind us that the slave trade was truly a global enterprise and that it is intrinsic to the world we live in today.
